biblical counseling bits
This Biblical Counseling Bits series provides a practical framework for understanding the role and process of biblical counseling. Jonathan walks through the three stages of counseling—exploration, insight, and action—along with the communication tools needed to build trust, uncover root issues, apply biblical truth, and help counselees move toward meaningful change. Throughout the series, the emphasis is on counseling with humility, patience, discernment, and dependence on the Holy Spirit so that people can see themselves and their circumstances from God’s perspective and grow toward Christlikeness.
Roles and stages
This Biblical Counseling Bit explores the counselor’s role in helping counselees see themselves, others, and their circumstances from God’s perspective. Jonathan introduces the three recurring stages of biblical counseling—exploration, insight, and action—and explains how each stage helps move a person from self-preservation toward Christlikeness and the glory of God.
Exploration stage
This Biblical Counseling Bit explores the exploration stage of counseling, where the goal is to establish trust and gain a true understanding of the counselee’s struggles. Jonathan explains how a posture of humility, patience, and compassion helps counselors move beyond presenting problems to uncover the deeper fears, wounds, and beliefs at the root.
Exploration tools
This Biblical Counseling Bit introduces three essential communication tools for the exploration stage: active listening, questions and probes, and restatements and reflections. Jonathan explains how these skills build trust, help counselees put words around their experiences, and guide counselors toward a clearer understanding of the presenting and root issues.
The Insight Stage
This Biblical Counseling Bit explores the insight stage, where counselors help counselees understand their root issues through the perspective of biblical truth. Jonathan explains how discerning a person’s heart posture allows the counselor to respond appropriately—warning the unruly, comforting the discouraged, and supporting the weak with patience and grace.
The Insight tools
This Biblical Counseling Bit introduces three communication tools for the insight stage: challenges, interpretations, and thoughtful self-disclosure. Jonathan explains how counselors can lovingly expose inconsistencies, connect struggles to biblical principles, and help counselees gain a clearer understanding of their thoughts, behaviors, and root issues.
The Action Stage
This Biblical Counseling Bit explores the action stage, where counselors provide clear biblical application that helps counselees move forward. Jonathan explains the importance of giving wise instruction, grounding hope in the gospel, and assigning practical, personalized homework that turns counseling insight into meaningful change.
The Action tool
This Biblical Counseling Bit introduces two communication tools for the action stage: giving information and providing feedback. Jonathan explains how counselors can apply Scripture to a counselee’s circumstances, offer practical resources, and lovingly address behaviors that may be hindering growth and meaningful change.
